The International Exchange Committee of Japanese Society foe Environmental Education is pleased to announce that the second “Research Exchange Seminar” will be held online.
The theme of this seminar is ” National & Regional Networking of EE Practitioners and Researchers in Asia – Experiences of Japan and Malaysia ”.
Speakers who have played an important role in developing regional and national EE networks in Malaysia and Japan will present their achievements and challenges.
The talk and discussion will be in English, with partial Japanese interpretation.
We welcome anyone interested to join.
このたび日本環境教育学会国際交流委員会では「第2回Research Exchange Seminar」をオンラインで開催する運びとなりました。今回のテーマは「アジアにおける国・地域の環境教育実践者・研究者ネットワーク~日本とマレーシアの経験から」です。
マレーシア・サバ州を拠点に、州・国レベルのネットワーキングの中核を担ってこられたBernadette Joeman氏をお迎えし、これまでの経緯と課題・意義をお話しいただきます。
また、日本の環境教育ネットワークを創世記から率いてこられた阿部治氏、次世代のリーダー加藤超大氏をお迎えし、日本での経験と現在の課題をお話しいただきます。
英語でのセミナーとなりますが、質疑応答は日本語でご参加いただけます。

Bernadette D. Joeman
Manager, Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), Sabah Forestry Department
Vice Chairperson, Sabah Environmental Education Network (SEEN)
Bernadette Joeman has over 28 years of experience in environmental education and currently manages the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) in Sabah, Malaysia. Her passion for nature began during her university days and was deepened by field research in the Danum Valley rainforest, Sabah, Malaysia.
She played a key role in founding the Sabah Environmental Education Network (SEEN) in 2005, a platform that connects educators, government bodies, NGOs, private sectors and communities to strengthen environmental education across Sabah. She is also a key contributor to the development of the Sabah Environmental Education Policy (SEEP).
Bernadette has actively shared her experiences through national and international conferences, including collaborations with partners in Japan. Her work in network-building, capacity training, and policy development reflects her strong belief that environmental education thrives through meaningful partnerships and shared vision.

Tatsuhiro Kato (Secretary General of Japan Environmental Education Forum / Vice-Director of ESD Resource Center of Japan)
Born in Nagoya, Tatsuhiro KATO worked as a JICA Environmental Education Volunteer in Jordan for 2 years after his graduation from the university. In Japan Environmental Education Forum (JEEF), KATO handles several environmental education projects in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Indonesia. Since November 2019, KATO has served as Secretary General of JEEF, actively promoting environmental education and ESD both in Japan and internationally.

Osamu Abe
Currently: Professor Emeritus at Rikkyo University; Chairperson of the Japan Environmental Education Forum (JEEF); Director of the ESD Resource Center; and Representative Director of the Japan Institute for Environmental Education.
Abe has previously served as President of the Japanese Society for Environmental Education; Representative Director of the Japan Council on the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD-J); Director of the Rikkyo University ESD Research Center and Institute; and Project Leader for Environmental Education at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).
As a founding member of both the Japan Environmental Education Forum and the Japanese Society for Environmental Education, Abe has devoted himself to the promotion of environmental education in Japan and the building of international networks. Abe also played a role in proposing the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), and to promote it Abe established ESD-J as a network organization, as well as the Rikkyo University ESD Research Center (now the ESD Research Institute) as a research institution. Through these initiatives, Abe has made significant contributions to advancing ESD both domestically and internationally.
